A husband-and-wife team Island Bay has trusted for nearly 40 years
Island Bay Motors has been on the corner of Derwent and Moselle Street since 1987. Nico runs the workshop and Stacy runs the front desk, and between them they’ve built the kind of reputation you only earn one honest job at a time.
Regulars have been coming back for nearly twenty years, and the reason is always the same. They explain the work, they show you why it matters, and they’re straight about cost and timeframes before anything happens. No surprises, no padding the bill.
One customer summed it up best after Nico talked them out of a paid repair and sent them to the dealer to claim it under warranty instead: it “reassured me there are honest mechanics in this world.” That’s the standard, every single time.

Nico and Stacy at Island Bay Motors are the best in the business. I've been going to them for nearly 20 years and they are so thorough and will always explain and show you the work they've done and why it's important. They are always transparent on cost and timeframes and are proactive about future work needing to be done so you can plan better. They are also well connected to others in the business like panel beaters, upholsterers and rust specialists so when there is something they can't do, they know exactly who you need to see! 36 years in business and it shows. Friendly, honest and awesome. I had an issue with my ASX engine, they got me down to get a quick diagnosis. They weren't sure what was going on - said they could give it a go but recommended I go to a Mitsubishi dealer and try to get it covered under warranty. All done really quickly and reassured me there are honest mechanics in this world!
I've had bad experiences before with other garages and these guys definitely restored my faith in knowing there are good, honest mechanics out there who wont charge you an arm and a leg. I am incredibly grateful to Stacy who was super lovely and explained my cars issues in a way I could understand and learn from (being someone with little knowledge of cars). They went above and beyond for me and I feel so good supporting an incredible small, local business doing good things for the world. They are just perfect!! I came by a few days ago and wanted to check out what's wrong with my car. The lady at the front desk was so nice and supportive, very helpful, though there is nothing they could help me with my car (not the mechanical issues), but she offered me a lot of information. I feel so well and happy! I will definitely recommend this place to my friends, and will come back someday in need.
